Over the past several years, over 4 million acres of lodgepole and ponderosa pine trees have been killed in America’s Rocky Mountains by the bark beetle infestation. After a beetle lays eggs, the tree subsequently starves and dies. The resulting blue color of the wood occurs due to a chemical reaction between the wood and the eggs. Fortunately, this does no harm to the structural rigidity of the log, nor does it (other than the blue color) change the wood in any way.
Unfortunately, very little is being done.
The Azure Furniture Co. has collaborated with local sawmills, the forestry department at Colorado State University and the US Forest Service to produce a furniture-grade level of this pine. Utilizing beetle kill pine in the construction of high-quality furniture is an efficient and environmentally sound practice that we are proud to help pioneer in the Colorado area.
